Praetorius Bagpipes |
These instruments are the reconstructed bagpipes based on "Syntagma
Musicum Band II" by Michael Praetorius (1571-1621). The shape, size,
tuning and tone range of each instrument are strictly according to Praetoius'
original description (but partly supplemented and/or modified according
to our interpretation - for further details please see "Concept of reconstruction").
Praetorius Dudey (Sound Sample)
Dudey is a very small bagpipe, having a cylinder form tiny chanter and
3 drones. It has the highest tone range among Praetorius' bagpipes. This
type of bagpipe (or similar bagpipes) is found in various paintings of
17th - 18th Century. As most of those paintings show a piper playing it
alone, it can be considered that the instrument was mainly for solo-playing.
A research report says that this kind of 3-drone type bagpipes were used
for wedding ceremony.

Praetorius Großer Bock (Great Bock) & Praetorius Bock
Großer Bock (Great Bock) is the biggest among Praetorius' bagpipes.
It has a cylinder form chanter with a cow horn and a very long drone which
also accompanies a cow horn on its top. It could be the origin of modern
"Bockspfeife", which are used nowadays in Central and/or Eastern
Europe. Although it is a very big bagpipe, it can be blown quite easily
and it sounds quite mildly.
Praetorius also described a bagpipe called "Bock", which was
a smaller version of Großer Bock. There are some text information
and tonality table in Syntagma Musicum. But no sketch of Bock is available.
This type of bagpipes might have been used in the Netherlands in Praetorius'
era, as some Dutch paintings in early 17th Century show farmers playing
very similar bagpipes.
